Messor barbarus is the most recommended ant species for beginners in France. Granivorous and very active, it collects, transports, and stores seeds in the nest — a fascinating behavior to observe daily, even for young colonies.

Its robustness and low maintenance make it the ideal species for a first colony: no need for particularly specific conditions for the colony to thrive. In a few months, a founding colony of a few workers can evolve into a colony of several hundred individuals, or even more.

Messor barbarus appreciates a humid/dry gradient in its nest: a humid area for the brood and larval development, and a dry area for storing its seeds. The XS or S Hydrix module from the Nexus range, combined with a Dryx module, constitutes an ideal setup for this species.

  • Origin: Mediterranean Basin (Spain, Southern France, Morocco)
  • Diet: Seeds (millet, flax, hemp, sunflower) + insects for protein
  • Worker size: 3 to 14 mm (strong caste variation: minor, media, major)
  • Queen size: 14 to 16 mm
  • Recommended temperature: 22 to 26 °C (living area), 20 to 22 °C (nest area)
  • Diapause: Yes, obligatory — approximately 3 months at a minimum of 10 °C
  • Humidity: Humid zone (brood) + dry zone (seed reserves)
  • Mature colony size: Several thousand workers
  • Breeding difficulty: Beginner
