Do you want to start ant farming and are looking for where to buy live ants in France? Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced ant keeper, this article guides you to make the right choice: which species, where to buy, and how to safely receive your colony.
Why buy live ants rather than capture them?
Catching a queen in the wild might seem tempting, but it's often disappointing: the species is difficult to identify, there's stress related to the capture, and no guarantee of successful founding. Buying an ant colony from a specialized breeder guarantees you a fertilized queen, a precisely identified species, and a much more peaceful start.
Which species to buy to start?
Not all ants are equally easy to keep. Here are the three species we recommend at AntWorld for beginners:
Messor barbarus – the ideal granivorous ant for beginners
The Messor barbarus is undoubtedly the most suitable species for a first rearing. Robust, not very demanding in humidity, it feeds mainly on seeds and is very active. Its growth is rapid and the colony can reach several thousand workers in a few seasons. It is native to the Mediterranean basin, so perfectly adapted to French conditions.
Camponotus nicobarensis – the large colorful tropical ant
The Camponotus nicobarensis is a popular choice among intermediate keepers. With its dimorphic workers (small and large) and vibrant colors, it is a spectacular species to observe. It requires a bit more heat (27-30°C) but remains easy to keep in an apartment.
Formica sp. – for experienced keepers
Formica ants are European ants with fascinating behavior, very active and curious. They are recommended for keepers who already have experience, as they can be more temperamental during founding.
How does live ant delivery work?
At AntWorld, every order of live ants is carefully prepared: the queen and her workers are packaged in a secure container, with damp cotton and food for the journey. Shipping is done from France, with packaging adapted to the seasonal thermal conditions.
We recommend receiving your package quickly and placing your colony in the dark for a few hours after reception to allow it to calm down.
Which nest to choose to welcome your new colony?
Once your colony is received, it needs a stable environment to develop. Our Nexus modular nests are ideal for this:
- The Hydrix XS Module for humid species (Camponotus, Formica)
- The Dryx XS Module for dry species (Messor barbarus, Tetramorium)
- The Starter Kit to have a nest + foraging area + accessories in one purchase
All our nests are made in France from PLA, modular and scalable: you expand the setup as the colony grows, without having to start all over again.
